Lawyers Consider Remote Online Notary

Remote Notary vs Traditional Notary

Use Case Comparison for Tennessee Lawyers

This situation has happened to all of us involved in the practice of law. (I am a Senior Paralegal), you may be an attorney or a paralegal. Situation: You have an out of town client. And the client needs to sign an oath to the Petition or Complaint you need to file on his behalf. You get the complaint drafted and ready for review, and signature by the client. You need it notarized. Now you have to decide on the logistics of getting this done and ready to file. Traditional snail mail (or hybrid) and in person traditional ink/seal execution. Or Remote Online Notary service – all electronic.

Traditional Notary Public

You print the Complaint and oath and send to the client via Overnight delivery like FedEx or USPS overnight delivery (guaranteed two days, maybe). Or to expedite it, you email to the client with instructions to print, sign in front of a Notary and send back overnight. Of course, the client works and does not have a Notary handy. So when he gets off work he searches for a Notary, but it’s too late. Client takes the next morning off work, finally gets the Oath signed and notarized and on its way back to you. If all the stars align in your favor you have it back on the third day. Unless there is a weather event, or a hub issue, or the delivery comes when everyone is out of the office.
Cost for average overnight service about $70 each way. Cost for Notary $10-$20. Cost to client varies depending on time off from work.

Remote Online Notary

You contact Remote Online Notary and setup the appointment based upon client’s lunch hour or even when he gets off work. Upload the document to the Notary service. Client receives email instructions and appointment confirmation. Client takes lunch or gets off work, completes identification verifications on his mobile phone, logs into notary session, signs the document, its notarized, pays the fee. The document is in your email inbox that night.
Cost $25 for one notarization, no time off work. It would even be possible to have this completed within about an hour.
